Yes, a banquet is meant to be carefree fun for those attending. But it is first and foremost a strategic gathering. A reinforcement and celebration of shared purpose, one where the host (us) creates an enjoyable environment for the guests (you) by turning on the heartfelt charm (a.k.a. service) in exchange for some mutually agreed-upon thing (your business).

A win-win. The truly enjoyable, worry-free environment (your experience) and what it facilitates (finished work you love) are the point, not the peacock tongues in aspic and chalices of the finest wines. Although the finest wines could be arranged (for the other thing, alas, you’d be on your own).

What even is a B A N Q U E T in this era?

It sounds old-fashioned. Classier than a buffet, less gluttonous than a smorgasbord, more momentous than a dinner Party, ‘banquet’ practically demands you put the word ‘lavish’ in front of it, which probably accounts for its historical whiff of the medieval. Or maybe Medieval Times - the word does imply a sort of heartily theatrical meal with servers and endless toasts.

Having experienced the last decade’s frantic rush of consolidation within the post-production industry, we are now seeing a shift away from the ‘bigger is better and more makes even more’ mindset.
Because those alleged efficiencies of scale never quite materialized and it wasn’t better after all, was it? Just more frustratingly impersonal and, given the suddenly swollen size of newly merged/expanded companies, labyrinthine and overlayered.

Bids became inflexible, and mined with guesstimated figures that were actually stealth overages-in-waiting. The high-level VFX creative you thought was shepherding your project was abruptly replaced by someone you’d never met.
